The Art Behind Comedy
Henri Bergson came up with this idea that comedy makes antisocial situations funny and promotes moral values. An example of this is the show American Dad. In the show there is a character named Rodger. He is an alien who is suppose to be a bisexual, racist, schizophrenic because he dresses up as so many different people, he makes fun of every race, and even though he would go out with a women he prefers to make fun of the gay guys he sleeps with as well. this goes to Henri's idea because laughing at Rodgers character shows the immoral values that shouldn't be adopted into reality.

I love american dad. That show is so bad morally but you truly cant help but laugh at the idiotic ideas and words of most of the characters in that show. The alien and Dan seem to be the most from what you already described terrible person. But his daughter Haley is i guess considered a hippie in this show who believes for equality, the mother is sometimes neutral and the son is irrelevant lol. So i guess theres somewhat a balance between the show. Its interesting how they all make us laugh from all being their own ignorant characters which is a production of henris belief.
ReplyDeleteAmerican dad definitely promotes antisocial behavior, and it shows our moral values. It might not be as good as Family guy but it still funny. It teaches us a lot while being funny. It does things people couldn't even image doing and we laugh at it, but we know it is not a normal thing to do.
ReplyDeleteAmerican Dad is definitely a good example of Henri's belief. It promotes terrible, antisocial behavior yet it is still one of the funniest shows on tv, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think American Dad is a great example of how things that we laugh at shouldn't be duplicated in society. You did a good example explaining how Bergson's concepts are about more than just humor.
ReplyDeleteI agree that American Dad is a perfect example. Especially because the racism is so prevalent in our society. These shows as well as what is going on around us prove how huge of an issue it as become.
ReplyDeleteI like how you said these values shouldn't be promoted in society yet they are because racism is very real and a big topic now a days. I love this show and I can see how it relates to comedy promoting values because this show shows a lot of wrong that we would never think to do.
ReplyDeleteUsing Rodger's racist remarks and how he makes fun of others really explains this concept because these values shouldn't be promoted in society as you said, this is a good show to explain this concept.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement that laughing at Rodgers character shows the immoral values that shouldn't be adopted into reality. Even though we laugh at the horrible things he does we could't dare do them ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThe idea you spoke upon is a true idea relating to Bergson's theory. American Dad is a perfect example, especially Rodger. His rude and racist remarks are something we tend to laugh at, but it teaches us moral values. Great job.
ReplyDeleteAmerican Dad is really good example of Bergson idea, by using Rodger as the main example that makes it even better. Rodger is a character that goes against all the social values.
ReplyDeleteThe alien in American Dad is a great example because he really is messed up. He shows us exactly what not to do in life.
